4. Noble ladies and gentlemen of the 1700s used a lot of makeup to impress each other. Since they rarely bathed, the makeup would get thicker and thicker. If they sat too close to the fireplace, the makeup would melt. If this happened, a servant was to move a screen in front of the fireplace to prevent this. What phrase originates from this scenario?

A stream is said to flow from here to a nearby lake, from where rivers flow in the four cardinal directions (N-E-S-W), called the mouths of the Lion, Horse, Peacock and Elephant respectively. It is a spiritual center for four great religions. What is this precious jewel of snow?

2. Identify this antagonistic folk character who flies on a giant broomstick or mortar, and is said to kidnap and eat small children.

5. X was a plain guy who used to live in the plains of Phrygia. A prophecy of the oracle made him the king of the land. According to the oracle, the first person who came into the city with a wagon was to be made the king. X was the first person. In gratitude he offered his wagon to Zeus. Instead of yoking it to an ox, he yoked it to a pole. As ages passed this place became a shrine and also a curious puzzle for travelers. What am I talking about?

6. This kingdom developed following the defeat of the great enemy, and had its main city along the river. Two fortresses were built on either side, the towers of the Sun and the Moon. Later when the kingdom fell from glory, and the enemy grew in power again, the tower of the Moon was lost, and the city along the river was mostly abandoned. The tower of the Sun was renamed as the Tower of Guard. Which kingdom?

7. Identify this Roman goddess.

8. What is depicted here?

9. This mythical monster in the form of a wolf was prophesied to cause the end of the gods. So the gods had it chained in a cage. But it grew so strong that no bonds could restrain it, so the gods used a chain of magic and tied the wolf down, deep below the earth's surface. At the end of the world, the wolf will kill the chief god, but in turn will be killed by the god's son. Identify.

10. This creature is believed to be from a line of plesiosaura. Many anecdotes reference it, but no concrete evidence has been found so far, save for many photos and videos which are subject to debate. The latest evidence supposedly stems from a Google Earth image which shows the creature's four legs and body. Sonar explorations have turned up nothing at all, making this creature more myth than reality. Identify this creature named after the place it has been 'seen'.

The first Qrossie

Snooty lay peacefully asleep, dreaming of death-defying leaps of thought and wicked connects for his next impossible-to-crack quiz. Oh, the world was so easy to befuddle! Miles away, the drug peddler was a little more cautious. She wasn’t quite used to this yet. She darted down another devious alley, scrambling to hide. Couldn’t afford to be too obvious. She left no easy trails, though there were clues dropped aplenty! After enough running, dodging and battling it out with technology, the first Qrossie finally took shape.

While she recuperates, the chequered field is now yours to conquer! All you need to do is send a screenshot of your solution to quizarre@gmail.com. Solve quick, and you shall enter the hallowed winners’ roll.

You need Java enabled to view the crossword applet.

If you do not have Java installed you can obtain it from java.com. If do have Java you may need to check your security settings to make sure that applets are enabled, especially if you are viewing the puzzle from your hard disk. In Windows XP you may be able to enable the applet by clicking on the yellow bar at the top of the window and selecting "Allow blocked content".

The First Quizarre Quiz...

Well, well, so after weeks and weeks of being badgered, Snooty finally obliges. Or maybe it’s because he finally found some time out, being with no job for the time being. Be that as it may, here’s the quiz below. 10 questions, and each answer is connected to the previous one. Ergo, answer 1 is connected to answer 2, 2 to 3 and so on. Please note that the connects are not the answers, they just serve as hints. So break your heads over it, and send in your answers as a numbered list to quizarre@gmail.com. We will put up the names of the first three all-correct entries, so here’s your chance to see your name on our site, and tell your grandchildren the tale of how you finished the first Quizarre quiz (of course, by then we will be major famous and all that!!)

I can sense a whack awaiting me for rambling on, so here’s the quiz…

1. This symbol X is always used to make a footnote reference in a book. Another symbol Y is used if a second footnote is needed. Thus X may occur by itself on a page, but Y is never alone and always accompanying X. So these two chaps supposedly see X and Y, and have a brilliant (and now famous) idea. So what or who are X and Y?

2. Identify

3. Identify

4. Identify the movie whose poster is shown

5. What does this map show?

6. Identify the singer

7. Identify the man shown here...

8. What is happening or has happened here?

9. Identify

10. Identify

Well then, hope you enjoyed it. Do remember to mail the answers to quizarre[at]gmail[dot]com, we shall post the winners in a few days.
